It’s a classic tale of an immigrant family who wanted a better life for their child. But when Robert Herjavec’s parents immigrated from Croatia to Canada, they couldn’t have had any idea of the success he would become.
He’s a self-made man, having pulled himself up by his bootstraps and built a phenomenally successful Internet business while waiting tables to pay his bills. Like the entrepreneurs and business owners who pitch to the Sharks, Robert knows what it’s like to sacrifice for your dream.
That business he was building was an Internet security firm called BRAK Systems, which led Canada in the Internet security industry and was eventually purchased by telecommunications giant AT&T for a whopping $100 million.
Herjavec wasn’t ready to stop there. He took on a position at RAMP Networks, which would soon be sold to another major telecom player, Nokia, for $225 million. His entrepreneurial spirit never seems to quit, and he is widely known and respected in the U.S. and Canada as an expert on building your own business.
In 2003, he created The Herjavec Group, once again in the field of security software. Today he is the CEO of that company, which is one of the fastest growing companies in Canada.
His book, Driven: How to Succeed in Business and In Life, was released in 2010 and was the #1 bestselling business title in Canada for seven months.
He is no stranger to the spotlight. Along with fellow Shark Kevin O’Leary and other Canadian business titans, he has appeared on Dragons’ Den, the Canadian version of Shark Tank, for the past five years.
When he’s not making millions or investing in other entrepreneurs, Herjavec spends time with his wife and three children in their 50,000 square foot mansion in Bridle Path, Toronto. He also owns a private vacation island off the coast of Miami, Florida.
As a Shark, Robert has invested in a variety of products, including gourmet food company A Perfect Pear, Gift Card Rescue, My Therapy Journal, and Grill Charms.
