Shark Tank Sharks: Barbara Corcoran

By   /   January 20, 2012  /   Comments Off

Barbara Corcoran knows how to get attention. As one of ten kids growing up in New Jersey, she learned from an early age how to stand out from the crowd. Her refreshingly frank attitude and enduring positivity are keys to her success in business, life, and the Shark Tank.

This Shark Tank Shark is also driven to succeed on her own terms, and that motivation is what led her to turn a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion real estate company. For 25 years, she led The Corcoran Group to the top of the lucrative, competitive New York City real estate market.

Corcoran believes that media exposure is a great way for entrepreneurs to boost their profile and credibility. She initiated this strategy in the 1970s by releasing a one-page assessment of the Manhattan real estate market to The New York Times. That tradition continues today, and The Corcoran Report is now a widely trusted source in New York real estate.

In 2001, she sold the company for $70 million. But Corcoran hasn’t slowed down since then. She has kept busy as an investor, author, speaker, and media personality. In 2005, she created a new venture for herself, Barbara Corcoran, Inc.

Her book Nextville: Amazing Places to Live the Rest of Your Life, is designed to help boomers choose the right real estate opportunities for them.

If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons on Your Pigtails (And Other Business Lessons I Learned from My Mom), her autobiographical business book, was recently revised and updated to include her adventures as a Shark Tank Shark. The new edition, Shark Tales, features updates on the investments she has made on the show.

These days, she regularly appears on NBC’s Today Show as a real estate expert. Her columns have appeared in More Magazine, The Daily Review, and Redbook. She has been profiled in House & Garden, The New York Times, O The Oprah Magazine, among many other publications.

Her investments as a Shark Tank Shark have included Daisy Cakes, designer Gayla Bentley, Grease Monkey Wipes, The Body Jac, Pork Barrel BBQ, and Ava the Elephant.
