Fashion guru and brand expert, Daymond John on Shark Tank is a savvy investor known to make deals of all sizes with passionate entrepreneurs.
Daymond John’s path to success started out with an opportunity. He wanted a fashionable hat, but couldn’t find what he was looking for at a reasonable price, so he made one for himself.
It all started in Brooklyn, New York, in 1992. After making hats for friends and family, he saw an opening in the marketplace for stylish, affordable clothing that consumers currently weren’t finding in stores. He truly saw the potential after selling $800 worth of hats in a single day.
From there, he and his mother mortgaged their home and invested that money in their new business, FUBU. In just two years, that business achieved national recognition and received hundreds of thousands of dollars in orders from national retailers and companies.
Endorsement from rapper LL Cool J and a distribution deal with Macy’s department stores were two of the company’s early successes. It wasn’t long before the company took off and rose through the ranks to join the likes of fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger, becoming a household name.
Since then, FUBU has gained international recognition, achieved more than $6 billion in sales, and made Daymond John a reputation as a savvy, sought-after entrepreneur. In addition to his fashion interests, John is also an author, consultant, branding expert, and professional speaker.
He shares his own story in his first book, Display of Power: How FUBU Changed a World of Fashion, Branding and Lifestyle. A second book, The Brand Within, focuses on advice for entrepreneurs who want to build a relationship with customers and the psychology of loyalty in the consumer marketplace.
His current businesses include FUBU, Coogi, Shark Branding, Heatherette, DrunknMunky, and Display of Power. In addition to his consulting and speaking engagements, his media appearances have included CNBC, Fox News, MSNBC, USA Today, CNN, and Black Enterprise, among countless others. He recently appeared on the cover of Adweek magazine.
Since joining the show in 2009, Daymond John on Shark Tank has been the show’s go-to fashion expert. He has invested over $700,000 in the show’s entrepreneurs. His choices have included One Sole, Wurkin Stiffs, HillBilly Brand, Lightfilm, LipStix ReMix, and Hells Bells Helmets.
